Located 10 min by foot from Mokpo Station, this guesthouse was completed in October 2019. It is located at the foot of the Yudalsan Mountain and has a view of the Ildeung Rock to the back. The name of the guesthouse, Ri-in, refers to a virtuous village. The manager of the guesthouse is an environmental activist with cultural anthropological knowledge and is eager to share the beauty and the ecological culture of Mokpo’s nature and its surrounding areas. The two-story building has three rooms in total. Room 1, the largest among the three, is a self-contained unit with a wide living room, ondol (under-the-floor heating system) rooms, and attic space. It is the only room in which one can cook, and its attic offers a comfortable space furnished with a sofa. Rooms 2 and 3 have a bedroom and an attic, respectively. The bedroom is notable for its window wall, while the attic can accommodate one to two guests on the floor. The building also doubles as a gallery, showcasing the works of Kim Soo-ho, a member of Mokpo’s first generation of Western-style painters, in the hallway and common spaces.

Deungdae Guesthouse in Mokpo is run by a village enterprise named Deungdae Co., Ltd. The guesthouse opened in May 2018 following the remodeling of a 35-year-old hospital building as part of an urban regeneration project for the entire area of Mokwon-dong, which is the old downtown of Mokpo. Deungdae, a Korean word meaning “lighthouse,” signifies lighting and guiding directions in the backward old downtown of Mokpoo like a lighthouse. The whole atmosphere of the interior is modern and clean. The rooms are furnished with only the essential facilities to make the area as wide as possible. The rooms are painted in pastel tone to create a stable, comfortable ambience. On the first floor of the building is “Small Morning,” a cafe and communal lounge run by Deungdae Guesthouse. On the third floor are 5 single bed rooms for solo travelers, 4 twin rooms with private bathrooms, a communal kitchen available for cooking, and a communal bathroom. In the communal bathroom, free use of washing machine, toiletries, dryer, magic dryer, and hair straightener are available. In the morning, Korean-style breakfast of soup and side dishes personally cooked by the host is served in the community room on the third floor. Noteworthy is the fact that a first-aid kit is made available in the red box installed on the wall on the third floor for easy use by anyone. The guesthouse displays the travel guide of Mokpo and leaflets. It is possible to get concierge service for the travel courses from the host. Located 200m away from Mokpo Station, the guesthouse offers easy access to important tourist attractions such as Nojeokbong Peak, Mt. Yudalsan, and Mokpo Modern History Museum, which are 5~15 minutes away on foot.

Pico Nojeokbong (노적봉)

Entre las muchas atracciones del monte Yudalsan se encuentra el pico Nojeokbong, un lugar de visita obligada en Mokpo. Este pico está estrechamente relacionado con la astucia del Almirante Yi Sun-shin, así como una victoria que este obtuvo sin luchar. Durante la Guerra de Imjin (1592-1598), el Almirante Yi tenía que encontrar una manera de derrotar a los japoneses invasores y contaba solo con una reducida tropa. Pergeñó un ingenioso plan usando paja y el pico Nojeokbong. Hizo cubrir los picos con fachadas de paja. Viéndolos de lejos, los japoneses creyeron erróneamente que eran sacos de alimentos para los soldados coreanos, estibados en grandes cantidades. Los enemigos pensaron que habría tantos soldados como los sacos de alimentos y se echaron en retirada en vez de combatir, lo que produjo la victoria sin luchar de Yi Sun-shin.

Estación de Mokpo (목포역)

La Estación de Mokpo es la entrada al mar del suroeste de Corea.
