Yukrimgogae (육림고개)

Yukrimgogae was the street that connected Yurim Theater (now closed) and Chuncheon Jungang Market in the past, becoming an unofficial downtown during 1980s to the 1990s. After the new city project, the stores relocated to the new downtown, leaving the area empty. In 2015, the street was rejuvenated with Makgeolli Street and Youth Mall. The street is full of restaurants and stores that was renovated providing an analog-feel combined with a trendy style.

Established in 1970, this restaurant helped build the reputation of the Chuncheon Myeongdong Dakgalbi Street. It specializes in serving seasoned dakgalbi stir-fried on a hot iron plate, with optional additions such as tteok (rice cake) or cheese. Its spicy dakgalbi, limited to 50 servings per day, is a popular choice. They also offer a variety of dakgalbi options, including soy sauce dakgalbi and natural cheese dakgalbi.

The street, named after Seoul's Myeong-dong, has become the main thoroughfare in Chuncheon. Although it is not particularly large, it links to the Yungnimgogae Pass and serves as a vibrant hub for youth, hosting a variety of shops and shopping malls that draw crowds. Additionally, the street is home to theaters, cafés, government buildings, major banks, and an underground shopping center. It also provides access to other popular tourist destinations in Chuncheon, including Myeongdong Dakgalbi Alley and Jungang Market.

This restaurant is one of the original places where Chuncheon’s dakgalbi (Spicy Stir-fried Chicken) tradition began. It retains the original method of charcoal-grilling marinated chicken. Chuncheon Art Gallery started from a simple exhibition at the Children’s Center in Samcheon-dong in 1995. The Chuncheon International Mime Festival is recognized as one of the world’s top three mime festivals, alongside France’s Mimos Mime Festival and the London International Mime Festival in the UK. The highlight of the festival is the fire performance “City of Fire: Dokkaebi Nanjang,” which lights up the dark night. Originally named Gongji Park, the park is located near Gongjicheon Stream and has been decorated with sculptures since 1997. Twenty-nine pieces are displayed and a water clock was installed in 2001. Gongjicheon Resort is located nearby the park with an outdoor stage and fountain. Water sports such as boat-riding can be enjoyed on the lake. The lake and the fountain are great locations to spend time with family and friends. Every year diverse cultural art events such as the Spring Art Performance as well as the Soyangjae Chuncheon Poetry Recital take place in the park and Gongjicheon area. A Children’s Center and War Memorial are also located nearby.
