Der Tempel Bongeunsa wurde 794 im 10. Jahr der Silla-Zeit von König Weonseong errichtet und war zunächst als Tempel Gyeonseongsa bekannt. Im Jahre 1498 ließ Königin Jeonghyeon den Tempel vergrößern und in Bongeunsa umbenennen. Während der Joseon-Zeit wurde er um ca. 1 km von Seolleung auf seinen jetzigen Standort verschoben. Hier werden unter anderem zahlreiche wertvolle und alte Schriften aufbewahrt.
