Le Musée Folklorique de Gwangju est géré par le gouvernement de Corée et s’est ouvert en 1987. Il fut construit afin de préserver les reliques folkoriques coréennes à travers des expositions. Le musée présente le style de vie riche et coloré ainsi que la culture folkorique de la région Sud-Ouest de la Corée incluant Gwangju et Jeollanam-do.

Le rez-de-chaussée présente les thème de la cuisine, des vêtements, du logement, du mode de vie et de l’artisanat. Le 1er étage, quant à lui, met en valeur les jeux folkoriques, les coutumes traiditonnelles et les religions. Le musée utilise également des maquettes ainsi que des vidéos représentant la vie du passé. Au total, 8 vidéotèques permettent aux visiteurs d’apprécier des démonstrations sur les 9 reliques culturelles de la région.
