Museo Nacional de Gwangju (국립광주박물관)

El Museo Nacional de Gwangju fue abierto el 6 de diciembre de 1978 con la finalidad de impulsar la apropiación consciente de patrimonios de la comunidad fortaleciendo las raíces históricas y culturales, así como la identidad local y regional. A través de constantes estudios científicos y colección de objetos y materiales relacionados con la cultura regional, el museo busca conservar y custodiar los bienes culturales de la zona y desarrollar su cultura y arte.

El museo fue construido según las especificaciones de un edificio tradicional y consta de 6 pisos en total, con numerosas salas de exhibiciones espaciosas y un jardín al aire libre que también sirve para presentar diferentes obras y objetos del museo. Con la remodelación realizada en diciembre de 1996 se agregó una sala de arte budista y una sala de exhibiciones especiales.

Colecciones y exposiciones del museo

El museo dispone de diversos objetos y restos de casi todas las eras y dinastías. Actualmente cuenta con alrededor de 72.293 artículos, 1.480 de los cuales se encuentran en exhibición. En el piso 1 se encuentra la sala de obras de arte y caligrafía, y en el piso 2 se encuentran las salas de la prehistoria, de las antiguas civilizaciones, de cerámicas de la Dinastía Goryeo (de ahí viene el nombre Corea) y Joseon; y de los restos encontrados en el mar de Sinan. En 2007 se terminó la construcción del edificio de Clases y Cursos Especiales y un museo pequeño infantil.
