Jumunjin Port, one of the main fishing ports on the east coast, is home to over 350 fishing boats. The East Sea, where the warm and cold waters meet, is excellent for catching many different types of fish including lance fish, pollack, herring, and anchovy, as well as squid. Jumunjin Fish Market was founded in 1936 and is situated in Gangneung next to Jumunjin Port, home to a large fleet of squid boats. It is the largest seafood market on the east coast and includes a dried seafood market and a hoe (sliced raw fish) center. The market is a favorite among both Koreans and international visitors.

Market specialties include a variety of fresh seafood caught on the east coast such as squid, mackerel, pollacks, pikes, and crabs. At the market, visitors can purchase these items and a number of dried seafood products at reasonable prices, as well as get a taste of fresh, delicious hoe.

Jumunjin Breakwater (주문진 방파제)

Jumunjin Breakwater was made famous as the filming site of the show “Guardian: The Lonely and Great God (2016).” Serving as the backdrop of the two leads’ fateful first meeting, the breakwater still retains its beautiful scenery. Many visitors recreate the scene from their favorite show here.
The breakwater itself is divided into the east and the west parts. The eastern breakwater is 1 kilometer, while the western breakwater is 200 meters long. One can fish for plaice from spring to September, while spotty belly greenling, spipefish, and rockfish can be found in October. From December to March, grey mullet and big-scaled redfin become the main species caught here. The best season to fish here is between October and March.

Jumunjin Lighthouse (주문진 등대)

Established on March 20, 1918, Jumunjin Lighthouse was the first lighthouse in the Gangwon region. The lighthouse is 3 meters in diameter at the base and 10 meters in x_height with white mortar covering the exterior wall. The building shows the early structure of Korean lighthouse architecture, which is a great value in terms of the nation’s architectural history. The light signal blinks at 15-second intervals and can be seen from 37 kilometers away. The original lighthouse was destroyed during the Korean War but was rebuilt in 1951.

Sodol Adeul Rock Park (소돌아들바위공원)

Follow the coastal road north of Gangneung to reach the white lighthouse at the end of the hill in Jumunjin. Beyond the lighthouse is Sodol Adeul Rock Park, boasting beautiful and unique rock formations sculpted by wind and waves. The first thing that greets the visitors as they approach from the road is a sharp and angular black rock formation that resembles a bull, followed by other rocks that take on the shape of elephants and many other shapes. Sodolbawi Rock was originally underwater before rising to the surface due to tectonic movements during the Jurassic Period 150 million years ago. It is home to a legend where an old couple prayed for 100 days to conceive a son, and thus a famous spot visited by many newlyweds.

Yeongjin Beach (영진해변)

Yeongjinhaebyeon Beach is a quiet and clean beach filled with the blue hue of the sea, making it a popular attraction among the locals. Compared to other East Sea beaches in Gangwon-do, the waves are not as rough and there are many rocks around the beach so children can have fun playing in the water. The beach is a popular vacation spot among people who are seeking to relax in peace.

BTS Bus Stop (주문진읍 BTS 앨범사진 촬영지 (버스정류장))

The BTS Bus Stop is located next to Jumunjinhaebyeon Beach in Gangneung and was created specially for album jacket filming. While the original bus stop was pulled down after filming, the popularity of BTS on an international scale led the city to reinstall the bus stop as a tourist attraction.

Hyanghohaebyeon Beach (향호해변)

Hyanghohaebyeon Beach is a white sandy beach backed by pine forest complete with a campground. The beach is connected to Jumunjinhaebyeon Beach and has become a must-visit attraction in Gangneung after featuring on BTS' "Spring Day" album jacket. The bus stop was made for filming, but remains as a photo zone.

Yeongokhaebyeon Beach (Yeongok Beach) (연곡해변(연곡해수욕장))

Situated in Yeongok-myeon, Dongdeok-ri, Yeongokhaebyeon Beach has a spacious sandy shore that spans 56,000 ㎡ with a length of 700 meters. Backed by a lush pine forest, this beach is ideal for camping. Fishing lovers can enjoy catching sweetfish at Yeongokcheon Stream flowing from the Sogeumgang River; there are a variety of restaurants offering delicious Korean food along the stream as well. Dongdeok-ri used to be home to a railway station and a traditional market. Trading ships—moving between the Hamgyeong and Gyeongsang areas—used to populate the beach. The beach and its surrounding attractions are great for both hiking and swimming.
