Guryongsa Temple (구룡사)

Guryongsa Temple is located 6 kilometers from Birobong Peak on Chiaksan Mountain, in the direction of Hakkok-ri. It was believed that Monk Uisang (625-702) of the Silla Kingdom (57 BC - AD 935) built and named the temple Guryongsa in 668 during the reign of King Munmu. However, it is now known that the temple was built after King Sukjong, the 19th King of the Joseon dynasty (1392-1910), who reigned from 1674 to 1720, because of the architectural style of Daeungjeon Hall. There is a legend that the Guryongsa Temple site was originally a lake where nine dragons lived. The name Guryong comes from the story that the lake was filled up to build the temple on it. There are many buildings such as Daeungjeon Hall, Bogwangnu Pavilion, Samseonggak Pavilion, Simgeomdang Hall and Seolseondang Hall. Daeungjeon Hall has maintained its original shape though it was repaired many times.

Deodeok, a local specialty of Hoengseong, is known for its slightly bitter taste and crunchy texture, making it a premium and healthy ingredient. This restaurant highlights the Park Hyeonjane deodeok bap set menu (deodeok rice set menu), which features deodeok sundae (sundae stuffed with deodeok), yukhoe (beef tartare), and deodeok bulgogi. Additionally, the menu offers dishes like deodeok bulgogi bibimbap and deodeong makgeolli (deodeok unrefined rice wine). To maintain the warmth of the food, dishes are served on hot iron plates. A typical meal concludes with warm nurungji (scorched rice), which is known to refresh and soothe the palate after the spicy flavors, rounding off the dining experience.

Chiaksan Mountain has several peaks reaching x_heights of over 1,000 meters, including Namdaebong, Cheonjibong, Hyangnobong, Sambong, and Birobong Peak, the tallest of the peaks at 1,288 meters. Chiaksan National Park, designated in 1984, encompasses a 182.09 ㎢ area with a 14-kilometer trail connecting the peaks from Birobong Peak in the north to Namdaebong Peak in the south.

In addition to these soaring peaks, the park also includes many deep valleys, unique rock formations, waterfalls, and tourist attractions. Some of the more popular destinations are Geumdaegyegok Valley, Taejongdae Rock, Seryeompokpo Falls, and Guryongsa Temple. The park draws in hikers all year round, with bright azaleas in spring, lush forests in summer, vibrant foliage in fall, and a white wonderland in winter.

Museum SAN (Space Art Nature), hidden in the mountain, was designed by Tadao Ando, a legendary architect known for his minimalistic exposed concrete buildings. The museum opened in May 2013 with the last works of James Turrel, known for his work within the light and space movement. The museum is spread out in a line starting at the trail at the Welcome Center, to the lawn parking lot to the Flower Garden, Water Garden, Main Building, Meditation Hall, Stone Garden, and James Turrell Hall. The four wing-shaped structure of the Main Building is designed using squares, triangles, and circles, reflecting the architect's philosophy of connecting land, sky, and humans. Additionally, the museum runs various experience and educational programs in addition to its permanent and special exhibitions.
Cafe Terrace in the Main Building is the ideal spot to take a rest while enjoying the 360-degree panoramic view of the mountain. At the Meditation Hall near the Stone Garden, you can relax your mind and body with the aroma and singing bowl sounds that fill the hall, while enjoying the beautiful scenery through the curved windows.

Wonju Sangwonsa Temple (상원사(원주)

Sangwonsa Temple is located at the foot of Namdaebong Peak (1,182 m) on the southern tip of Chiaksan Mountain and is built atop a flat rock floor with an area of around 330 m2. Cool spring water shoots up from a crack on a rock before the temple and a 40 meter-tall cliff is located in front of it while three rare katsura trees stand at the tip of the cliff. The story of a pheasant returning a favor, which became the origin tale of Chiaksan, is a myth created at this temple.

Though it is not clearly known when Sangwonsa was first constructed, it is believed to have been built during the Silla Dynasty considering the stone pagodas and other relics at the temple. The two stone pagodas in front of the sanctuary add greater magnificence to the beauty of the Buddhist temple in the heart of an old mountain. The temple is designated as a Gangwon-do Cultural Heritage Material.

This restaurant is run by Hoengseong Chukhyup (Hoengseong Livestock Cooperative). You can purchase premium cuts of hanu, raised in the Hoengseong region, directly from the counter and grill them in the restaurant. After paying the table setting fees, help yourself to side dishes from the self-serve bar, where refills are also available. The restaurant also offers dishes made with hanu, such as bulgogi and hanutang (Korean beef soup). Other branches can be found in the Ucheon and Saemal areas.

Seomgang River crisscrosses the heart of Hoengseong County, flowing on towards Wonju before eventually joining the Namhangang River. The banks of this river are home to a variety of wild flowers, including bright pink royal azaleas that bloom every spring. Gigantic rocks and pine tree forests on each side complete the view. High on the bluff rests Unamjeong Pavilion, overlooking the river and the unfolding vista. Hoengseong's downtown area starts right after crossing Seomgang River on Heongseonggyo Bridge. Nearby attractions like Hoengseong Sports Complex and local resturants specializing in fish stew also attract more tourists to come after sightseeing.
