Explanation
Maduhee is a traditional folk game rooted in Hakseongji, a historical record of Ulsan from the reign of King Yeongjo of the Joseon Dynasty. Through storytelling and historical interpretation, the festival reinforces the tradition and identity of Maduhee while evolving into a community-led tourism festival. By combining summer leisure activities along the Taehwagang River with lively evening programs such as the Chimaek (chicken and beer) Festival, it offers a unique seasonal experience. As the first major summer festival of the year in Korea, the Taehwagang Maduhee Festival provides a venue for community unity through the Maduhee Tug-of-War, in which citizens from across Ulsan take part. Held in the historic downtown area of Jung-gu, Ulsan, the 2026 festival features the grand Maduhee Tug-of-War, Water Tug-of-War on the Taehwagang River, the Chimaek Festival, EDM parties with DJs, ssireum (traditional Korean wrestling) competitions, and a variety of hands-on experiences.
