Während sich das politische Geschehen und das Hofleben in den Palästen abspielte, lebte im Unhyeongung der Thronverwalter Heungseon Daewongun, Yi Ha-eung. Als Gojong volljährig wurde und den Thron bestieg, wurde Unhyeongung palastähnlich ausgebaut. Während der japanischen Kolonialzeit und im Koreakrieg wurde er jedoch so stark beschädigt, dass heute nur noch ein kleiner Teil des ehemaligen Anwesens zu sehen ist.
